Critical Resources kicks off new Canadian lithium hunt

Critical Resources (ASX: CRR) has kicked off a new phase of exploration, launching a maiden prospecting program at its Vermillion Bay lithium project in north-western Ontario, Canada.

The company has sent a field crew to the 1000-hectare project to undertake geological mapping and rock sampling in a bid to evaluate the potential for lithium-caesium-tantalum (LCT) style pegmatites. The program comes at a time when Ontario’s government is looking to inject a further C$30 million (A$30.9M) into junior exploration, providing a favourable policy backdrop for grassroots work.

The work at Vermillion Bay is expected to take two weeks and will focus on pegmatitic intrusive rocks, their contacts with the surrounding host rocks and any structural corridors that could host mineralisation. While LCT pegmatites have not yet been confirmed on the claims, Critical is applying a modern exploration lens to ground historically explored for other commodities to uncover its overlooked lithium potential.

Previous exploration in the area was primarily directed toward uranium and dimension-stone granite. However, historical records from that work showed the presence of the pegmatitic intrusive rocks, providing a solid geological starting point for the current campaign.

Notably, the project sits close to the Trans-Canada Highway, with forestry roads and trails ensuring good local access to support the company's prospecting and any follow-up exploration activities.

The Vermillion Bay project is just 70 kilometres west of Critical’s flagship Mavis Lake lithium project, where the company has already defined an impressive inferred mineral resource of eight million tonnes grading 1.07 per cent lithium oxide. Vermillion Bay sits in the Kenora-Vermillion geological corridor, a highly prospective geological setting for lithium, caesium and tantalum-hosted LCT pegmatites along with orogenic gold mineralisation.

The broader region is already buzzing with activity, with players such as Rock Tech Lithium launching fieldwork on nearby ground, highlighting the continued industry interest in unlocking new lithium discoveries in the district.

While Canadian lithium is a key focus, the company has also recently made an aggressive push into South American gold, securing a significant 228-square-kilometre ground package in Suriname. The portfolio includes three projects, Gadu Manda, Gonini and Greenstars, all located in the highly prospective Guiana Shield. The geological province is considered the South American counterpart to West Africa’s phenomenally rich Birimian Shield, home to 500 million ounces of discovered gold.

The sizzle in Critical's Suriname play is the nearology. Its Gadu Manda project sits just 4km from Chinese giant Zijin Mining’s 11.6-million-ounce Rosebel mine, a monster operation that has produced more than six million ounces of gold. Adding to the intrigue, small-scale artisanal miners have already been working the northern part of the Gadu Manda permit area, with pits and trenches exposing quartz veining. This potentially gives the company a ready-made set of walk-up targets, with the old-timers having already done much of the legwork sniffing out near-surface gold.

The region has seen a flurry of corporate activity of late, led by Zijin's US$360 million (A$520M) acquisition of the Rosebel mine in 2023. More recently, gold giant Gold Fields tipped C$77 million (A$79.32M) into explorer Founders Metals for a 19.9 per cent stake. At the same time, private investment house La Mancha has taken significant positions in other Canadian-listed explorers active in Suriname.

Rounding out its asset portfolio, Critical owns the Halls Peak base metals project in New South Wales, with an inferred resource of 840,000 tonnes at 3.7 per cent zinc and 1.5 per cent lead and is evaluating next-generation solid-state lithium-ion battery intellectual property in the United States. The company also has interests in a suite of gold, antimony and tungsten prospects in New Zealand, giving it exposure across multiple critical commodities and jurisdictions.

With the field crew now on the ground at Vermillion Bay, Critical appears to be running a multi-pronged strategy of advancing its flagship Canadian lithium assets while building out a global portfolio of multi-commodity projects. And with a solid resource already in the bank just down the highway from its latest hunt, any early success at Vermillion Bay could add another interesting lithium chapter to its developing story.
